Primary school pupils get hands-on with modern farming tools

    8 August 2025

    By Dr Gemma Charlton

It’s always great talking to the next generation of animal scientists, and I recently had the pleasure of visiting a local primary school to talk to the pupils about dairy farming and the exciting on-farm technologies we use today.

The children had already been learning about traditional farming methods, so it was a great opportunity to show them just how much farming has developed over the years.

They were full of brilliant questions and really engaged throughout the session. One of the highlights was showing them some of the wearable devices we use to monitor cow health and behaviour, which really captured their interest. They especially enjoyed trying on the devices themselves and seeing how the technology works up close.

It’s always rewarding to connect with the community and help young people understand where their food comes from and how innovation is shaping the future of farming.
